B’nai Brith Canada marks U.N. Human Rights Day with call for dedication to fight real and pressing human rights abuses

TORONTO, December 10, 2009 – On the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, B’nai Brith Canada has called on the international community to dedicate itself to counter real human rights abuses worldwide.

“As people around the world get ready to celebrate the festival of Chanukah, a time of reflection and dedication for the Jewish people, we must remember exactly what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations were intended to represent and, at the same time, ensure that we are all dedicated towards countering the real and pressing human rights abuses that are happening all over the world,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “We must always be on the look out to ensure that the principles of freedom, peace, and justice, and not politics and racism, drive the human rights work that is done.

“As sad as it is to admit, the U.N. and its bodies such as the Human Rights Council have become notorious in recent years for nothing more than being part and parcel of the campaign to delegitimize and demonize the world’s only Jewish State. This worrisome reality must really change or the U.N. will cease to exist as a legitimate organization capable of defending the freedoms and human rights we all hold dear.

“We live in a time where innocent Iranians are being murdered by their illegitimate regime on an almost daily basis for nothing more than expressing their desire for freedom. In recent years, we have also witnessed the genocide of hundreds-of-thousands of Darfuris at the hands and desires of Sudan’s Islamist government. With such atrocities going on around the world, no one can reasonably justify the resources the U.N. and its bodies put into propagating against Israel, a state that safeguards the rights of all of citizens. It is imperative that this dreadful situation changes.”
