B’nai Brith Canada commends Christian friends for repudiation of anti-Israel rhetoric at United Church Council
TORONTO, August 12, 2009 – B’nai Brith Canada has commended the multitude of Christians at the United Church of Canada’s (UCC) 40th General Council who have repudiated some of the ugly anti-Israel rhetoric that was injected into material for a proposed divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel. From our representative at the Council, Salomon Rayek, Chair, B’nai Brith Canada Board – British Columbia, we have learned that these delegates unanimously voted to renounce what they called the "provocative, unbalanced and hurtful" wording of some of the anti-Israel background documents.
“We wish to commend our Christian friends at the UCC Council for having the courage to stand up to those few anti-Israel agitators within the Church, and repudiate some of that disgusting antisemitic and anti-Israel rhetoric in the background documents,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “We call on UCC delegates to continue down this path and forcefully reject the resolutions calling for a divestment and sanctions campaign against the Jewish State that will come up for a vote tomorrow.
“With yesterday’s motion to renounce the antisemitic rhetoric, it appears that UCC delegates are following in the footsteps of the vast majority of peace-seeking Christians and are trying to take back the Church’s apparatus from that small segment within who appear bent on furthering a destructive agenda that does nothing to further the core interests of UCC members. Our representative is on the ground in Kelowna working hard to ensure that the truth about Israel is heard and that UCC members realize that the reputation of their church is at stake at this gathering.”
