Tisha B’Av highlights the inalienable historical, national, and religious bonds between the Jewish State and its eternal capital, Jerusalem
TORONTO, July 29, 2009 – Sunset this evening corresponds to the Jewish calendar date of Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the month of Av, which commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were savagely demolished on the very same day (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.). To mark this day of mourning, Jewish communities from around the world will observe a Fast Day in remembrance of these tragedies and others that have since befallen the Jewish people.
“To the Jewish people, Tisha B’Av signifies the devastation and calamity we have experienced throughout our history. It also reminds us that we are perpetually singled out by our enemies for annihilation – something that we cannot forget as Israel faces several existential threats from the forces of Islamofascism,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President.
“Whether it is the terrorist threat and rocket attacks emanating from Iran’s proxies on Israel’s southern and northern borders; a UN consistently singling out Israel, while remaining silent on Islamic terrorist crimes and real human rights issues; voices around the world apparently suggesting that certain parts of the Jewish State’s eternal capital be Judenrein; or the overriding threat of nuclear weapons in the hands of the world’s top sponsor of terrorism – our people shall overcome.
“On this solemn day, we reiterate our conviction that the historical, national, and religious capital of Israel is, and always will be, Jerusalem. As we commemorate our Temple, and its ancient home in Jerusalem, we remain steadfast in our conviction that peace will only come to the Middle East after the recognition by Arab/Muslim countries that the Jewish State of Israel is here to stay, and that the fundamental right of its citizens to live in safe and secure borders is not up for negotiation.”
